Whispers Before the Leap
By TM Yedideya Beyene
What if the real barrier to rewarding challenges isn’t a lack of skill, but the story we whisper to ourselves just before we begin? Imagine all that remains undiscovered, confined within that silent sphere of hesitation. It is the space where silent, doubtful whispers thrive and forward strides falter.
Let’s put that into context. You’re about to get the promotion you’ve worked so hard for. Suddenly, those whispers surface: What if I can’t handle the responsibilities? Will I meet expectations? Am I biting off more than I can chew?
The real barrier isn’t a lack of skill—it’s the story we tell ourselves just before we begin. These are the self-limiting beliefs that hold us back, more than we’d like to admit.
The Sphere of Hesitation
If you’re a Toastmaster, this may feel familiar. Your Vice President Education (VPE) asks you to be Toastmaster of the Day for the first time. Instantly, the silent, doubtful whispers take over: I’m not ready. I’ll look like a fool standing at the lectern. Not now, next time I’ll be ready. And just like that, the opportunity to take a step forward passes.
"Not Ready"
The fear of looking foolish at the lectern.
"Next Time"
The perfect excuse to stay in familiarity.
"Too Much"
The belief that the stakes are too high to jump.
Rewiring the Narrative
Most of us carry our own versions of such stories. That’s where Toastmasters comes in. As both a community and a platform, it helps us dismantle these barriers by bringing them into awareness and equipping us with the tools to face them.
Each time we accept a leadership role or volunteer for a meeting role, we learn responsibility and discover new skills. Repetition builds experience. Experience rewires resistance, quieting the doubtful whispers and strengthening the courageous ones, filling the sphere of hesitation and propelling us into action.
Final Thoughts
What opportunity are you currently hesitating on—not because you lack skill, but because of the story you’re whispering to yourself? Each step forward makes the next one easier, until hesitation becomes a choice, not a default.
