A Historic Milestone
The Blue Nile Toastmasters club is celebrating its 67th anniversary this year. This milestone was not reached by accident but through the enduring legacy established by visionary founders and sustained by members who served tirelessly over decades. Established in 1959, Blue Nile is the first club in East Africa and the second in the African continent, following the Johannesburg Toastmasters club which started nine years earlier in South Africa.

Reflecting on the historical and social context of the time, it is clear that Blue Nile’s founding members were among the highly educated and elite members of the society.
One notable member was the Honorable Laureate Maitre Artiste Afewerk Tekle, a pioneer of Ethiopian art renowned for combining traditional painting techniques with modern contemporary styles. He is particularly known for his abstract painting and stained glass works which continue to be celebrated worldwide. Beyond his artistic achievements, he was also the first to earn the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) title in Ethiopia, if not for the region. His accomplishment invites us to reflect on the early Blue Nile members and their impact locally, regionally, and globally.

The Legacy Today
Today, through the power of available community mobilization tools, Blue Nile is far more accessible than in its initial days. Individuals from all walks of life can now participate in developing their interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills. The club provides a platform for self-discovery through the Toastmasters’ structured learning pathways. Our vibrant members share their experiences, aspirations, and visions one speech at a time, making Blue Nile a space for growth and transformation.
Building on the legacy of the founding members, today’s club includes individuals at different stages of their personal and professional journeys. Some who have already established their paths and those still discovering their calling. Despite their diverse experiences, they share a common commitment and dedication to continuous growth and self-improvement.
Like many enduring clubs, Blue Nile has experienced periods of inactivity and seasons of fading in the background. However, it overcame the challenge. Blue Nile has re-emerged and re-registered, becoming one of the high-performing Toastmaster clubs in Ethiopia since 2019.
Blue Nile has truly shaped generations one speech at a time and has set an example for other clubs in the country and across the region. For this, we owe deep gratitude to the generations before us who established this great platform in Ethiopia, keeping us in mind. Now, it is our responsibility to sustain and strengthen this legacy for those who follow.
Carrying the Torch Forward
The future is still dependent on the caring hands of the willing. Blue Nile’s continuity depends on the collective efforts of committed individuals. Today, the club is stewarded by a diverse vibrant executive committee and members who are working tirelessly to ensure continuity and quality of the club.
This effort is crucial because in many countries, including Ethiopia, public speaking is not part of the curriculum. Cultural norms may sometimes discourage open expression. In this context, platforms like Blue Nile and other Toastmasters clubs in the country play a crucial role in nurturing confident voices and bold leadership.
As the host nation to major international organizations such as the African Union and the United Nations, Ethiopia offers a uniquely diverse and global environment. Toastmaster clubs in the country have an opportunity to reflect this richness by encouraging participation across sectors and nationalities. Greater diversity can foster deeper intercultural exchange and enrich learning experiences for all members. Additionally, efforts should be made to extend access beyond Addis Ababa, ensuring that individuals across the country can benefit from such platforms.
